2D Legend of Zelda Game In Develeopment For Nintento Switch, 3DS

The Legend of Zelda Breath: of the Wild will be released alongside the Nintendo Switch as a launch title this coming March. As for the next The Legend of Zelda game, series producer Eiji Aonuma says that the franchise might be returning to its roots.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the first console Zelda game since The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword was released 6 years ago. And since it will be a launch title for a new console, the game will usher in a new era for Nintendo and the series. Meanwhile Nintendo, is already looking forward to the next entry of the Legend of Zelda.

Aonuma recently spoke with Game Informer on the future for The Legend of Zelda. The producer said that two teams are developing for Zelda games; the 2D and the 3D which handled Breath of the Wild.

The 2D was responsible for the universally praised The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds which was released for the 3DS, Nintendo's handheld console. In the interview, the producer teased that the 2D team isn't busy developing Breath of the Wild and could already be working for Link's adventure on the Nintendo Switch. "Yes, there is a definite possibility," Aonuma said when asked if the 2D team is developing a game for the new console.

The Nintendo Switch is aiming to bridge the gap between console and handheld gaming with its unique design. A 2D Legend of Zelda game for the new console could mean that Nintendo has merged their development teams under one system.

Nintendo has said that the Switch is not a replacement for the 3DS but that doesn't mean that future games can't be playable on both consoles. In fact, Nintendo already has a game in Fire Emblem Warriors that is slated for release on both the Nintendo Switch and the 3DS according to Polygon. It would be wise for Nintendo to release a new Legend of Zelda game on both platforms to maximize profits.
