Apple will utilize PrimeSense technology to add a new method to unlock iPhone, suggest analysts. Cowen and Company on Wednesday distributed a research note to clients suggesting that the next iPhone could be utilizing some "form of facial/gesture recognition".
According to Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Acuri, this technology would rely on "a new laser and infrared sensors mounted near the front-facing camera", and this leads to the possibility that Apple is now working on a technology cultivated by PrimeSense.
Before the acquisition by Apple back in 2013, PrimeSense has released a video that showed a number of gesture-based controls for products like robot vacuums, projectors, and other oddities. Since then there is very little to none info about the company's doings.
The technology by Tel-Aviv based company had been originally applied to gaming but was later applied in other fields. PrimeSense was best known for licensing the hardware design and chip used in Microsoft's Kinect motion-sensing system for the Xbox 360 in 2010, before Apple bought them for $360 million.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has talked about his company's interest in augmented reality technology in public several times in the past year. The tech giant is integrating its augmented reality technology into the iPhone's camera, and faces will be one of the first things its technology should be able to recognize reported Business Insider.
Arcuri and his team cite "field work" from Apple's supply chain for its findings. Most of what they've uncovered line up with the current rumors about the upcoming iPhone. Acuri also expects that the new iPhone would feature the following:
1. There would be a feature-rich launch with 3 models - a 5.8 inch iPhone in addition to the existing 4.7 and5.5-inchh models.
2. OLED screen, a new kind of screen technology that uses less power and produces deeper blacks will be implement in the 5.8 inch model.
3. The 5.8 inch iPhone will have a wrap-around design and will integrate the Touch ID fingerprint sensor under the glass and in the active display area - the touch screen.
He also ultimately believes that the newly redesigned iPhone, which he is calling the "iPhone 10″ or "iPhone X" will be "yuge" and believes it could trigger a "super cycle" of upgraders.
