The Rikers Island Prison vicinity was recently stormed by controversy after the many questions surrounding the way that the facility keeps the connection of inmates and guards intact. An ongoing trial is being addressed by the prosecutors which looks to justifiably take action on dozens of Rikers employees in the course of four years.
As per Yahoo, Eliseo Perez, an assistant chief for security at New York's Rikers Island Jail complex, was quoted on his statement to the inmates, saying, "Somebody's leaving in an ambulance tonight." He was then reported to have allegedly told five other colleagues to bring prisoner Jahmal Lightfoot to a room in the attempt to kick his teeth in per se, one which rendered the prisoner with facial injuries.
According to Reuters, a running trial of nine correction officers over the supposed 2012 physical battery is being held, as well as the suspected cover-up of the incident. The issues and investigation of such does not stop there, as other Rikers employees are now being thoroughly looked into by the responsible prosecutors in the four-year span of violence that was said to have plagued the Island complex.
News Trust noted that more than fifty guards of the facility have been bestowed criminal charges since 2012, such include assault, falsifying reports and smuggling contraband court documents as well as data from numerous city agencies. Commissioner of the city's Department of Investigation, Mark Peters, gave his comment on the prison, saying, "Rikers is a very troubled institution. We are now seeing the result of systemic neglect." Peters is in charge of the concerns related to Rikers and its staff.
Rikers Island prison is known for containing male, female and adolescent prisoners in ten separate facilities, majority of which are inmates with pending trials. As for the Lightfoot case, the attorneys involved defended that it was a means of self-defense when Lightfoot attacked with a weapon. Nonetheless, the prosecutors claim to still have their sights set on the justice to be served for those mistreated and thwarted by the Rikers system.
