'Mission: Impossible 6' is an upcoming action-thriller film intended as the latest installment in the popular franchise featuring Tom Cruise as the lead protagonist. The sequel may bring back Jeremy Renner as IMF agent William Brandt.
According to CDA News, Renner may be reprising his role as IMF agent William Brandt alongside Tom Cruise's lead protagonist IMF agent Ethan Hunt. The 45-year old actor was first introduced into the spy-thriller series in 2011's 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' and served as a key character ever since.
Although no official confirmation of the actor's involvement in the sequel has been announced, a Twitter exchange between Renner and director Christopher McQuarrie fueled speculations of his return. According to Cinema Blend, Renner tweeted, "Hey, is the band getting back together? Should I start stretching? @chrismcquarrie" to which the director himself replied, "Wear comfortable pants. You're gonna need 'em."
The Twitter exchange took a hilarious turn, with both parties proceeding to banter and crack jokes, according to Moviepilot. It seemed that Renner was keen on making a third appearance in the sixth installment in the franchise as a character who served in an important supporting role as well as comedic balance.
McQuarrie has already officially signed on to rejoin Cruise and returning female lead Rebecca Ferguson. The upcoming film is being eyed for a possible 2017 summer release.
The filmmaker also directed the preceding film 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation'. His film proved to be the second strongest film in the franchise based on box office earnings right after 'Ghost Protocol' as it gained $682 million against a $150 million budget. It even earned solid praise from critics and long-time fans of the franchise.
The filmmaker is known for being a frequent collaborator of director Bryan Singer and also helmed several blockbuster action films throughout his career. He worked on 1995's 'The Usual Suspects' as screenwriter, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He also worked on 2012's 'Jack Reacher', 2008's 'Valkyrie', 2010's 'The Tourist' and 2014's 'Edge of Tomorrow'.
