Robert Downey Jr will don the Iron Man suit a few more times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however none of such movies will be Iron Man 4. Downey Jr said that the film is not in the cards for MCU's phase three, but rumors continue to persist that the fourth film in the box office franchise could still be squeezed in in the movies to be released for 2020.
Despite the franchise's large acquired following throughout the years, Downey Jr said that Iron Man 4 is not in the works in Marvel. According to Hit Flix, Downey, Jr. revealed that he considers the upcoming Captain America: Civil War as his mini- Iron Man 4.
"In a way it's Cap 3, but for me it's like my little Iron Man 4 and then it's back to the thing we all recognize. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that's how it is until it changes. If it changes." Downey said.
Director Joe Russo also revealed his thought about the matter, saying that it is 'impossible' to replace Downey Jr in the Iron Man 4. As reported by Parent Herald, Russo also added that if Downey Jr decides to stop playing the role, the character would probably have to take its time off of the big screen.
However, despite the confirmation from RDJ, speculations continue suggesting that the upcoming film could be one of the untitled Marvel films for 2020. According to Master Herald, Ty Simpkins' Harley Keener is also rumored to be the next in line to don the Iron Man suit after Downey Jr's version.
The Iron Man franchise is one of Marvel's most successful after raking in more than $2 billion in total for the three films previously released. But with the MCU constantly growing and changing as well as the other solo films scheduled to be released for other Marvel heroes, the absence of Iron Man 4 can be considered reasonable. Marvel is yet to give their statement about Iron Man 4.
