Upgrade Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with TWRP 3.0 Custom Recovery: How to Install

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) is the latest device to receive support for a custom recovery via TWRP 3.0 in preparation for Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Although the device was released this year, it currently runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop which drew flak from the Android community.

TWRP 3.0 custom recovery just released its support for the device in preparation for the custom upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Aside from Galaxy A3 (2016), this recovery was also made available to Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A7 (2016). Variants of Galaxy A3 (2016) eligible for upgrade include A310F, A310FD, A310Y, and A310M.

Please take note of the following reminders before installing TWRP 3.0:

  • Use only Galaxy A3 (2016) and other prescribed devices;
  • Back up all necessary data like apps, settings, photos, etc.;
  • Install a USB driver for Galaxy A3 (2016) on PC.
  • This custom recovery only works with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and all future Android updates; and
  • Installing the any custom ROM induces risk of damaging device. Neither this site nor developers will be held responsible for such damage.

Here's a step-by-step guide to install TWRP 3.0 on Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016):

1. Download TWRP 3.0 recovery package here.

2. Extract the downloaded file in the PC.

3. Download ODIN v3.09 here.

4. Turn off device.

5. Go to Download Mode by press holding the volume down and home buttons simultaneously. Then press the power button until an Android robot and a triangle pop up.

6. Press the power button again to confirm action.

7. Launch ODIN on PC.

8. Connect device to PC while device is in Download Mode.

9. Once connected, one of the ID:COM boxes will turn yellow with the COM port number.

10. Choose PDA or AP on PC.

11. Choose CWM package file on PC.

12. In ODIN, untick the checkbox Auto Reboot and choose F. Reset Time options if unchecked.

13. Click the start button in ODIN. Installation process should start now.

14. Once completed, press hold power, home and volume buttons simultaneously until screen goes black.

15. Release the volume down button and continue holding the volume up button along with power and home buttons.

16. Reboot device by choosing the reboot option in TWRP.

The device should now be ready for custom upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
