‘Suicide Squad’ to stay kid friendly with PG-13 Rating; Director calls Jared Leto’s Joker “incredible”

'Suicide Squad' is an action-adventure and fantasy film written and directed by David Ayer. The film is set to have a PG-13 rating despite earlier rumors of an R-rating. Ayer also expressed his admiration for Jared Leto's portrayal of the villainous Joker in the film calling the actor "incredible".

According to MovieWeb, the upcoming DC superhero film will remain kid friendly with a PG-13 rating despite previous reports of it receiving an R-rating. Producer Charles Roven confirmed the news during promotion of another DC film 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'.

He said, "At the moment, my understanding is we are still releasing Suicide Squad as a PG-13, so there hasn't been to my mind a serious conversation about doing anything other than that. I understand why Deadpool was released as an R-rated film, and I think that the DC Justice League characters, particularly because so many of them are so iconographic, have been around for so long and for so many generations that have grown up with them, and that are still growing up with them, I think we want to present them, when we finally present them, to the broadest possible audience that we can."

Roven pointed out that some of their PG-13 rated films still remained "edgy" enough not to demand an R-rating. The move for the tighter rating came after the success of 'Deadpool' at the box office. Despite being R-rated, the Marvel film earned $731 million against a $58 million budget making it the highest-grossing R-rated comic book film to date.

According to Flickering Myth, 'Suicide Squad' will follow a group of dangerous supervillain inmates as they are recruited to work for the government in exchange for pardon. David Ayer will be directing a massive cast that includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Common as Monster T.

Ayer praised Leto's performance as The Joker, calling his interpretation of the iconic DC villain "incredible". According to Melty, the director said, "What Jared has done is absolutely incredible. When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops. What he's done is so powerful, so menacing, so palpable, you can feel him. The crew stops working and just watches him. I have to get everybody going again because he's so fascinating."

Leto joins a line of big names who played The Joker in various Batman films through the years including Heath Ledger for 2008's 'The Dark Knight', Jack Nicholson for 1989's 'Batman' and Cesar Romero for 1966's 'Batman'.

'Suicide Squad' is an upcoming action film based on the DC characters of the same name. It is scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016 and is currently in post-production.
