Google Nexus 7 (2013) Upgrades to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with TWRP 3.0 Custom Recovery: Update Guide

Google Nexus 7 (2013) just received support from TWRP 3.0 custom recovery for Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Google Nexus 7 (2013) devices will receive access to a number of advanced features and customization options.

Google Nexus 7 (2013) has been entitled to upgrade its current software status with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. With TWRP 3.0 recovery, Nexus 7 (2013) phone owners can experiment with the phone's abilities according to their desire.

Google Nexus 7 (2013) is the latest device to receive TWRP 3.0 custom recovery. Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016), HTC One M8, Xiaomi Mi3, Xiaomi Redmi 1s and Redmi Note 4G, among others, already received the same support since last week of February 2016.

Below is the full list of TWRP 3.0 features and tweaks:

  • Some devices utilize their capacitive buttons in recovery
  • Default Time Zone (for more accurate time stamps)
  • Zip SignatureVerification
  • Zip md5 Verification (looks for file with zipname.zip.md5)
  • Ability to flash multiple zips in one go
  • Back - Up a Menu Level
  • Search - Select Current Selection
  • Default zip folder location
  • Default color themes

Nexus 7 (2013) owners interested to proceed with the upgrade are advised to install the ROM at their own risk as it may damage device. Such damage cannot be held against this site or the ROM's developers. Most importantly, do not use this ROM to any device not prescribed.

Below are the prerequisites of installing the ROM:

1. Unlock device.

2. Install TWRP Recovery here.

3. Back up all necessary data here.

4. Download USB driver here.

Here's a step-by-step guide to install TWRP 3.0 to Google Nexus 7 (2013):

1. Configure ADB and Fastboot in the PC here.

2. Connect phone to PC using the USB cable.

3. Copy then paste downloaded ROM files to phone's memory or SD card.

4. Download TWRP (twrp-3.0.0-2-hima.img) here and copy/paste it in the android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory.

5. Go to Fastboot/Bootloader mode.

6. Type in: adb reboot bootloader.

7. Press Enter.

8. Wait for the driver to be installed.

9. Type in: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.0-2-hima.img

10. Press enter.

11. Once completed, select Recovery and enter Recovery mode.

12. Select "reboot system now" from the recovery menu.

13. Wait for TWRP to be installed.

Check the new software version now.
