Kate Beckinsale is set to return Selene as the war between the mystic beings of werewolves and vampires continue in the upcoming Underworld 5. Len Wiseman said that the tv version of the franchise is still in the works, while franchise star Theo James said that he will sit out in the next Underworld film.
Beckinsale is taking the spotlight once again as vampire Selene in the upcoming fifth installment of the long-running franchise. However, Movie News Guide reported that it could be her final film in the franchise as it is turning 12 years this year, and the actress could pass on the central role to a younger character. Her former husband, director Len Wiseman who helmed the previous installments has also vacated the director's chair, and is involved as a producer instead.
Despite lacking a confirmed timeline for its release, Movie Web reported Wiseman's confirmation that they are still eyeing on making a small screen version of the show. "Yes, there's been a lot of conversations and even development on what that series would be. It's really appropriate for television, in terms of how those characters can really tie in but also become something new", Wiseman said.
"It's really an attractive space. I don't want to put a date on it because then that's going to be printed and it might not happen in that timeframe, but it is a thought", he added. However, details on its case and timeline are still unknown.
As for a possible Underworld 6, Toronto Sun reported that fans could expect James' absence. "It was one of my earliest jobs. And it was a contractual option that was taken up," James said about Underworld 5. When asked about whether he will be in the sixth film, James said that he is likely to sit out. "No. It was a contractual obligation and I think I've told as much of that story as I could", James mentioned.
Filming is currently underway for the project which started in October last year. Underworld 5 is directed by Anna Foerster, also starring Bradley James, Tobias Menzies, Lara Pulver, Trent Garrett, and Daisy Head. It is set for release on October 21, 2016.
