‘Wolverine 3’ R-rating confirmed; 3rd film to take place in alternate universe?

'Wolverine 3' is a planned action-adventure film featuring Hugh Jackman in his final appearance as the titular mutant. It is confirmed as an R-rated film and may be loosely based on the violent 'Old Man Logan' comic book material.

According to Cosmic Book News, Hugh Jackman's final outing as the titular mutant is anticipating an R-rating. Fox studios is reportedly aiming for the MPAA rating following the massive success of another 'X-Men' film, 'Deadpool', after its release on February 12, 2016. 'Deadpool' earned a surprising $709 million against a $58 million budget making it the highest grossing film of the year so far.

The film is to be based on the eight-issue Marvel comic books called 'Old Man Logan' written by Mark Miller and illustrated by Steve McNiven. The original series began on June 2008 and ended in September 2009.

According to Den of Geek, it is set in an alternate universe and over 50 years into the future. The story takes place in post-apocalyptic United States where the nation is taken over and divided by supervillains who band together to destroy all superheroes once and for all. Logan also refuses to transform into Wolverine again since he already has a wife and two children.

It would seem like an apt ending for Jackman's last stint as Logan a.k.a. Wolverine in the 'X-Men' shared cinematic universe, as 'Old Man Logan' is full of bloody brutality, murder and violence. The series itself was deemed controversial due to its extreme nature.

According to another article by Cinema Blend, the original comic books also featured other Marvel characters such as Hawkeye, the Hulk, Magneto, Dr. Doom and Red Skull. It is highly unlikely that these characters, owned by Marvel Studios, would make it on the 'Wolverine' standalone film. The odds of a true adaptation also seem highly unlikely for director James Mangold's interpretation.

'Wolverine 3' is a planned action-adventure film directed by James Mangold and penned by Michael Green. It is intended as Jackman's third and final appearance as Wolverine. It is scheduled to be released on March 3, 2017.
