‘Tomb Raider’ reboot in the works: Star Wars' Daisy Ridley might play new Lara Croft; Backstory could be explored

'Tomb Raider' is an upcoming reboot that may feature Daisy Ridley of 'Star Wars' fame as the main protagonist Lara Croft. She may take over the role made famous by Angelina Jolie in the early 2000 releases. The reboot comes after the highly successful reboot of the videogame series of the same name the films are adapted from.

According to GQ, Ridley is eyed to play the iconic Lara Croft in the upcoming reboot of the popular 'Tomb Rader' live-action cinematic series. She is among one of the actresses in the running for the much coveted role for the feature film scheduled to be released in 2017.

The English breakout star is best known for her portrayal of Rey in the 'Star Wars' franchise. She began her career in minor roles in television series including 'Casualty', 'Toast of London' and 'Silent Witness'. She later bagged the role of Rey in J.J. Abrams 'Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens' released in December 2015.

According to Deadline, there have been no official casting negotiations for the upcoming reboot as of the present. Lara Croft was famously played by Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie in the older 'Tomb Raider' videogame adaptation. Jolie was first introduced as the English archaeologist and main protagonist in the series in the 2001 action-adventure and thriller film 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider'.

The original film was directed by Simon West and penned for the big-screen by Patrick Massett and John Zinman. It earned $274 million, against a $115 million budget and became the highest grossing film on its opening weekend. However, it was received with negative reviews with some critics calling the storyline bland.

A sequel, 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life', was released on 2003 with Jolie reprising her role as the titular heroine. It did not receive the same mainstream success as its predecessor and heavily panned, only earning $156 million in the box office.

The desire to reboot the cinematic series came after the long-running videogame's reboot in 2013 by developer Square Enix. It aimed to explore Lara Croft's adventures as a young archaeology student as well as her backstory.

According to Moviepilot, the success of the videogame reboot prompted MGM and Warner Bros. to revitalize the film franchise with Roar Uthaug set to direct. The Norweigan film director is best known for his catastrophe drama 'The Wave', which was Norway's submission for the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

'Tomb Raider' is a yet untitled reboot of the action-adventure and thriller franchise adapted from the highly popular videogame series of the same name. It is scheduled to be released sometime in the year 2017.
