Google Nexus 5 Receives Support for Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow via AOSP: How to Install

Google Nexus 5 phones can now proceed to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow via AOSP custom firmware. Despite the device being officially updated to Marshmallow, here is a good guide for those who want to get custom features of the latest Android software.

Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update through AOSP custom installation offers Google Nexus 5 (Hammer head) phones a different way to play with new and unique features that the official build does not offer. It is already fast, smooth and reliable despite it being under beta stage at the moment. However, like any beta ROMs, there could be instances that some features might not work well. Overall, it is guaranteed that AOSP custom firmware will make Google Nexus 5 a different device.

Before downloading and installing it, it is important to take note of the following reminders first:

  • Root phone first.
  • Install custom recovery like ClockWorkMod.
  • Back up current setting using Nandroid.

To begin installing AOSP custom firmware on Google Nexus 5 (Hammerhead), here is a detailed guide:

1. Download Android 6.0.1 AOSP ROM and Google Apps on PC.

2. Connect device to PC using USB cable.

3. Copy downloaded zip files from PC then paste to phone's SD card. Place it in the SD card root.

4. Switch off device and plug it out from PC.

5. Go to Bootloader Mode by press holding volume up and down and power buttons.

6. Follow on screen instructions. Switch on device by press holding volume up and down and power buttons.

7. Follow on screen instructions. Choose "Bootloader" then go back to Recovery.

8. Once in ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery, select "wipe data/factory reset" using the power button to navigate.

9. Select "wipe cache partition."

10. From CWM Recovery, go to "advanced" and choose "wipe dalvik cache."

11. Go back to main recovery menu then choose "install zip from SD card."

12. Tap "choose zip from SD card" using the volume keys to navigate.

13. Confirm installation and wait until completed.

14. Repeat steps for Google Apps.

15. Once installation is completed, go back to +++++Go Back+++++.

16. Click "reboot system now."

Check new software versions now.
