Robert Eggers' directorial debut, 'The Witch,' has gained positive remarks from critics and while it has only been a month since it premiered, talks about a possible sequel have already started surfacing. Unfortunately, the director was fast enough to slam these rumors, confirming that 'The Witch 2' is not happening.
According to Eggers, he does not have any plans of creating a follow up film. Movie Web reports that though the film have received a warm welcome from the audience, 'The Witch 2' is not happening. He argues that he would have made the initial movie longer, instead of helming another one if he wanted to know what happens next.
Furthermore, Cinema Blend debates that 'The Witch' does not need to have a sequel. The story should stay where it already ended. Cinema Blend finds Eggers decision to be quite fresh in perspective because sequels for such horror films are very common. He also revealed that 'The Witch' was only a proposition once and he does not have any intention for it to become a franchise.
At present, Eggers has his hands full for the projects that he is doing. It is rumored that he will be directing the reboot of 'Nosferatu' which tells the story of Dracula from 1922, as well as the medieval epic, 'The Knight'. Apart from that, he is also said to be directing some episodes in a series about 'The Mad Monk' Rasputin.
In related news, UPI reports that Anya Taylor-Joy, who played Thomasin in the film, has officially boarded the biopic of Barrack Obama, 'Barry'. The film will tell the college years of a young Obama in New York. Taylor-Joy's character will encounter young Obama and he will somewhat have a forged key relationship with her.
Going back to 'The Witch', it notably won a Directing Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival for the U.S. Dramatic Category. The film revolves around a Puritan family who struggles to survive and suddenly encounters a witch in their place, complicating their lives.
