Three decades after it has been released, "Top Gun" is finally having a sequel. "Top Gun 2" is now in talks for producing and Tom Cruise will still be the one to play the iconic role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. However, its release date is yet to be announced.

News about Cruise's meeting with producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been circulating the social networking site, Twitter, as reported by Deadline. The producer, himself, reportedly tweeted about their meet-up which according to the site, was a discussion for the sequel's plot.

Bruckheimer's tweet last January 27 said "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2." This gave hope to the fans of Cruise and the movie as they are finally seeing progress to the much-awaited sequel of Top Gun which was released in 1986.

It was noted that David Ellison, CEO of Skydance Productions, hgave the go signal for the sequel of "Top Gun" last June, according to Wired. However, there have been no updates regarding "Top Gun 2" since then. Nonetheless, the site claimed that the plausible scriptwriter of the film is Justin Marks, who also supervised the script of "The Legend of Chun-Li."

As per Inquisitr, plans on producing the sequel of "Top Gun" has been on for so long. But it had to take an abrupt halt when the original director of the movie died of suicide last August 19, 2012. This sudden turn of events caused the sequel's development to be paused for years. Now, it is expected that to be back on track after it has been put off for so long.

"Top Gun 2" will reportedly adapt the changes of technology which has obvious difference from the initial film. It will involve drone technology and fifth generation fighters. Aside from that, it is expected also that Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the first movie, will reprise his role.

"Top Gun" centered on a pilot named Pete "Maverick" Mitchell who struggles to be on top in his class. However, his attitude and behavior have caused him not to be in good terms with his colleagues.
