The player-versus-player module of Elite Dangerous is now available for purchase separately on various game platforms.
In a report by EuroGamer, the PvP portion of Elite Dangerous which is called Arena can now be purchased via Frontier's store or via Steam for $7.50 (£4.99 in the UK). Players who had already owned the main game can access Arena which is the same mode that is available from main Elite Dangerous menu previously named CQC.
Frontier hopes that the release of Elite Dangerous: Arena in a separate module will increase the number of online players. This is mentioned in a statement when Frontier announced the release of Arena as a separate download hoping that it would bring more players to the game:
"We believe Elite Dangerous: Arena is a compelling game in its own right and want to offer it to players whose main goal is to play fast paced PVP space combat action," states the developer.
"This will open Elite Dangerous to a whole new group of players, all of whom you can play against in the Close Quarter Combat Championships (CQC) in Arena mode in Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons. So if you haven't played CQC already we have a number of challenges starting today that you can join in with."
Players who purchased Elite Dangerous: Arena will be entitled to play CQC with a total of $100,000 in prizes at stake, reports Endgadget. It also said that Frontier CEO David Braben told PC gaming critic, Rock Paper Shotgun, that the module targets the interst of combat lovers.
"If you're thinking of having a session of Call of Duty or FIFA or an RTS or whatever, this is another alternative that you can put in the mix," said Braben.
Elite Dangerous is playable on the Mac, PC/Steam, Xbox One, and coming to PS4. The game has sold 1.4 million units for the PC, Mac and Xbox One last year.
