How to download and install stable Android 6.0 Marshmallow custom ROM for Google Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012)

By

The Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2012) may experience Android 6.0 Marshmallow via custom ROM installation. Nexus 4 users may download the stable Marshmallow build codenamed Mako while Nexus 7 (2012) owners can install the BeanStalk Marshmallow custom ROM.

People owning the Nexus 4 might have been disappointed to find out that their phones will not get the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. However, Neurogadget reported that the Nexus 4 can get a taste of Marshmallow via unofficial custom ROM installation.

The most stable Android 6.0 Marshmallow custom ROM codenamed Mako was made by XDA developer Aldrin Holmes. To use Mako, Nexus 4 owners should first download and install the TWRP 2.8.7.0 file on their devices. Next, they need to boot their phones either through the Quick Boot application or by manually shutting off their devices and simultaneously pressing the Power and Volume (Up and Down) buttons. This should load up the TWRP screen which will prompt users to install the TWRP interface.

Then, Nexus 4 owners have to install the ROM and Gapps. They should also download and install the ROM-Gapps combo by vocoderism before rebooting their phones again. Once they have completed the steps above, their Nexus 4 devices will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Not only the Nexus 4 can be upgraded to Marshmallow via custom ROM. There is also an unofficial Marshmallow build for the Nexus 7 (2012). Like the Nexus 4, the Nexus 7 (2012) was also among the devices that Google discontinued software updates for.

For those who own the Nexus 7 (2012) and want to upgrade to Marshmallow, they can install the BeanStalk custom ROM which offers useful features like a native Task Manager switcher and a Do Not Disturb option. International Business Times listed the requirements and steps involved in installing the BeanStalk software on the Nexus 7 (2012).

According to Lawyer Herald, Google will release the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 5, and the Pixel C tablet. The Nexus 10 tablet will only get upgraded to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Other devices currently getting the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update aside from the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2012) are: Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC One M8, One M9, and more. The Android 6.0 Marshmallow update contains various new features, security patches, and bug fixes.
