'The Mummy' is an upcoming adventure-fantasy film intended as a remake to the original film of the same name released in 1932. It is scheduled to be released on June 2017 and will star Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures pushed back the release date for the upcoming reboot to June 9, 2017. It was originally scheduled to be released on March 24 of the same year. Although plot details remain under wraps, it will be set in the modern times as opposed to the remakes of the same name starring Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz.

The move reportedly followed scheduling adjustments for the upcoming 'Star Wars: Episode VIII', which was moved to December. According to The Independent, 'The Mummy' reboot will be the first film in Universal's planned monster movie franchise, which aims to unify classic monster movie remakes into one cinematic universe.

Alex Kurtzman will be directing the reboot based on a screenplay by Jon Spaihts. Kurtzman worked as a writer in blockbuster films such as 'The Island', 'The Legend of Zorro', 'Mission: Impossible III', 'Watchmen', 'Star Trek' and 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. He directed his first full-feature film, 'People Like Us', which starred Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The film is set to star Tom Cruise as the lead protagonist with Sofia Boutella of 'Kingsman: Secret Service' officially joining the cast as the female version of the villainous mummy, according to IGN.

The original 'The Mummy' film released in 1932 starred Boris Karloff as the titular monster while Stephen Sommers' rebooted series 'The Mummy', 'The Mummy Returns' and 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' featured Arnold Vosloo and Jet Li as the antagonists.
