'The Invisible Man' is an upcoming live-action adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic science-fiction and fantasy novel of the same name. Johnny Depp has recently signed on to Universal Pictures' reboot of the 1933 film directed by R.C. Sherriff. The film is part of the studio's plan of creating a monster movie universe.

According to The Mary Sue, Universal Pictures' newest monster movie remake will feature Johnny Depp in the lead role. It will be a reimagining of James Whale's classic 1933 film of the same name penned for the big screen by R.C. Sherriff. H.G. Wells' science-fiction novel published in 1897 served as the film's inspiration.

In the original story, the titular Invisible Man is Dr. Jack Griffin, a scientist dedicated to the study of optics who invented a way to change the body's refractive index and turn it invisible. He managed to successfully experiment on invisibility on himself by using a highly dangerous drug but failed to reverse the procedure. It lead him to become jealous, psychotic and murderous.

According to another article by i09.com, Whale's original 1933 film adaptation starred Claude Rains as Dr. Jack Griffin a.k.a. The Invisible Man. He was joined by Gloria Stuart, William Harrigan and Henry Travers. The film was eventually selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its "cultural, historical, or aesthetical significance".

The reboot starring Depp will be produced by Alex Kurtzman of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' and Chris Morgan of 'Furious 7', according to The Hollywood Reporter. Insiders revealed that Ed Solomon of 'Now You See Me' and 'Men In Black' fame is writing the screenplay. No director has been announced as of the present.

The film is reportedly part of Universal's plan to reboot several classic monster films for one big monster cinematic universe. This includes remakes of films such as 'Dracula', 'Frankenstein', 'Bride of Frankenstein', 'Wolfman' and 'The Mummy'. The latter is set to feature Tom Cruise in the lead role.
