Dallas City Officials Voted to Prevent Sex-Themed Convention to Return to the City

Dallas city officials had voted on Wednesday, preventing an erotica convention to return to the city. The officials are worried that the kind of event could tarnish the image of the city. The said convention will feature porn stars, sex toy sales and a whipping dungeon as supporters of the event said they had been touring big cities without major incident.

According to the Time, in an 8-7 vote, the divided City Council of Dallas came into a decision to oppose the comeback of the sexual themed event, "Exxxotica Expo" to the city. Mike Rawlings, the Mayor of Dallas City said, "I do not believe this event is good for our city's brand. This is a business that participates in the commerce of sex, pure and simple."

In 2015, the event had been criticized as the said event carried out a three day shows of X-rated film stars, adult-themed shows and sex toys to the downtown Dallas convention center, CBS DFW reported. Twenty residents took on a trial and heard their emotional testimony. The opposing party included, Roslyn Dawson Thompson along with Dallas Woman's Foundation said the expo promotes sex trade.

Councilwoman Jennifer Staubach Gates also said the event exploits women. "I am not going to be silent about this. I am not going to be silent about an industry that is exploiting women and children," she said. However, Councilman Phillip Kingston justifies the issue that the expo does not commit any crime.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown told the council that their undercover officers reported no crimes committed last year. There was also no reported spike in prostitution or violations of the state's obscenity laws. J. Handy, the event's organizer said he would fight the decision in court, suing the city over the ruling and seek a temporary injunction. Other stops for the Exxxotica Expo include Illinois, Ohio and New Jersey.
