'Assassin's Creed' is an upcoming live-action adaptation of Ubisoft's video game of the same name. Michael Fassbender, who plays the lead protagonist Callum Lynch and his ancestor Aguilar, revealed that the film was influence by 'The Matrix'.
According to Den of Geek, Fassbender likened the upcoming live-action adaptation of the award-winning 'Assassin's Creed' video game to the Watchowski Brothers' cult film trilogy 'The Matrix'.
The 38-year old actor revealed, "I've always thought about The Matrix when we've approached this... This idea of DNA memory elevates it from a basic fantasy genre [piece], because you have something an audience can actually believe in. Then the journey becomes so much more elevated, because you're on board in a different way".
'The Matrix' was a neo-noir science-fiction action film released in 1999. It depicted a futuristic yet dystopian time in human society where reality was distorted and simulated by machines in order to subdue the human race. A computer programmer named Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, leads a rebellion against the machines in order to free society from its artificial reality.
Fassbender related the storyline of the 'Assassin's Creed' cinematic adaptation to the Watchowski Brothers' science-fiction film as it centers on a man enlisted to travel to the past through the use of DNA.
According to Polygon, the upcoming film follows main protagonist Callum Lynch as he travels back in time to 15th Century Spain in order to explore the memories of his ancestor, a member of the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins. Callum eventually becomes embroiled in a secret war to take down the Templar Organization in the modern world.
Fassbender is joined by 'Macbeth' co-star Marion Cotillard as well as Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, Callum Turner, Michael Kenneth Williams, Ariane Labed and Matias Varela among others. According to Collider, Justin Kurzel is directing a script penned by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Lesslie.
'Assassin's Creed' is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film adapted from the popular Ubisoft video games of the same name. It is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2016. Ubisoft also expanded their series to other media including comic books and novels.
