Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update via Custom ROM Brings New Vanilla UI & More

By

Samsung has just released the official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update to Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 phones earlier today in South Korea. While the device manufacturer promised to roll out the official update to other Galaxy devices, a custom ROM based on the latest Android build has already been made available to Galaxy S5 phones for those who cannot wait for the official release.

Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE variant with model number G900F can now be updated to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow using the AICP custom ROM. According to WCCFTech, the custom build brings a host of customization options on top of the Android AOSP user interface called Vanilla. Aside from which, the AICP ROM also offers new tweaks and improvements, plus a more stable performance.

As normally it would with custom ROMs, it is highly advised to back up all necessary data stored on the phone, including the downloaded apps since installing the ROM will clear all memory spaces of the device. Charge up the phone to at least 80% to prevent power interruption which might cause damage on the phone.

Before deciding to download and install the ROM to the phone, here are a few things that should be done:

1. Make sure Samsung Galaxy S5 is the G900F version. Never try the ROM on other versions or models.
2. Download and install USB drivers for this version.
3. Enable USB debugging mode from developer menu.
4. Download and install a custom recovery tool on the phone like CWM or TWRP.
5. Back up necessary data.

To begin with the update, here are simple steps:

1. Download the AICP Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow ROM here.
2. Download the Google Apps here.
3. Press hold simultaneously the volume +, home and power buttons to restart phone into Recovery mode.
4. Perform Nandroid backup of the existing ROM. This will allow users to get back to the original software version once ROM is updated. To do this, go to Backup and Restore > Backup again. Once back is complete, go back to main recovery menu.
5. Choose "Wipe data/factory reset". Tap "Yes" to confirm action.
6. Once completed, go back to CWM recovery menu > Wipe Cache Partition > Wipe Dalvik Cache.
7. Tap Select Install zip from sdcard > Choose a zip from SD card. Find the downloaded AICP ROM and select it by pressing the power button. Tap "Yes" to confirm action. Installation shall begin.
8. Once completed, go back to third step to install the Google Apps.
9. Once completed, go back to the main recovery menu. Select "Reboot system".

Once completed, the phone should now be in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. To check the software, go to Settings > About phone.
