‘Labyrinth’ Reboot rumors debunked; Remake not happening, says screenwriter Nicole Perlman

Nicole Perlman of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' fame denied any reports of upcoming reboots for the 1986 classic 'Labyrinth'. She made it clear that no remake will be happening in the future. However, she may still be involved with a project with the Jim Henson Co.

According to i09, Perlman took to Twitter to deny all sorts of rumors regarding an upcoming remake of the 1986 film directed by Jim Henson.

In a series of Tweets, she announced that no rebooting will take place and explained that the new project will be a "continuation of the world be handled with love and respect." She added, "Henson Co & I started talking in late 2014, so the timing of these rumors is so upsetting. I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death."

Perlman's defense came from online backlash targeted at the apparent "cashing in" on David Bowie's recent demise. Bowie starred as Jareth the Goblin King in Henson's original film alongside Jennifer Connolly, Shelley Thompson and Christopher Malcolm. The popular musician succumbed to his lengthy fight against liver cancer earlier this year.

News of a possible 'Labyrinth' reboot was previously revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. The article wrote that Tri-Star closed a deal with the Jim Henson Company for a modern reboot of the film. Lisa Henson of the Jim Henson Company will produce the film and will be overseen by Nicole Brown at Tri-Star.

In addition, Perlman was allegedly hired to write the screenplay. The American screenwriter is best known for her work on 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. She is also set to pen the script for the live-action adaptation of 'Captain Marvel' together with Meg LeFauve.

The timing for a big-budget reboot seemed coincidental enough with Bowie's death that fans of both the original film and of Bowie grew outraged. According to the Guardian, Perlman grew upset over the implications of taking profit out of someone's loss.

She said, "All I can say is that the timing for the story was awful; it felt like a punch in the gut... Bowie's music helped me through some of the hardest times of my life. I respect him as a musician, an actor, an icon and, most importantly, as a human being. It would have been a dream come true, to write something for him."

'Labyrinth' was a 1986 adventure-fantasy and musical film directed by Jim Henson based on a screenplay by Terry Jones. It starred Jennifer Connelly as a spoiled 15-year old girl who goes on an adventure to save her baby brother.
