The newest installment in the popular vampire-lycan franchise is set to premiere in theaters on October 21, 2016. It will feature the return of Kate Beckinsale as the vampire Selene.
According to /Film, Len Wiseman is back on as producer but relinquished his role as long-time series director to Anna Foerster.
The 42-year old co-created and directed the first ever 'Underworld' film in the popular vampire series in 2003. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the film gathered massive box office gains, a dedicated cult following as well as four more sequels.
It seems like Wiseman is looking to expand the franchise to the small screen. He finally gave an update on the status of the planned television series revealed two years ago, according to JoBlo.com.
Wiseman said, "Yes, there's been a lot of conversations and even development on what that series would be. It's really appropriate for television, in terms of how those characters can really tie in, but also become something new. It's really an attractive space." He added that although plans are coming through, he doesn't want to put a specific timeframe for it.
Plans of a possible television series isn't the only thing Wiseman hinted at. According to MovieWeb, he also revealed that movie sequels are also in the works. The yet untitled upcoming fifth film in the franchise is set to star Kate Beckinsale as the main protagonist Selene. Production for 'Underworld 5' took off in October 2015 in Prague.
'Underworld 5' is an upcoming action-horror film intended as the sequel to 2012's 'Underworld: Awakening'. It is scheduled to be released on October 21, 2016 and is directed by Anna Foerster based on a script by Cory Goodman. Len Wiseman, David Kern, Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard S. Wright are producing while Anna Foerster and Skip Williamson are executive producing.
The new film features the return of Kate Beckinsale as the lead protagonist. She is joined by Theo James, Lara Pulver, Bradley James, Charles Dance, Tobias Menzies, Alicia Vela-Bailey and James Faulker among others.
