Frontier Developments has confirmed that exciting new development on Elite Dangerous: Horizons is to be announced soon. Also, the developer marks a new milestone of success since the release of the game with over 4 million copies sold by the end of December 2015.

This awesome news was just announced last week via Frontier Developments official website where it revealed that it has sold 1.4 million units of Elite Dangerous for the PC, Mac, and Xbox One by the end of December 2015, adding that fans can look forward to exciting new development coming soon for Horizons expansion.

Frontier CEO David Braben said via Frontier official website:

"We have an amazing player community. The average play time among our 1.4 million players is 60 hours - that's a massive 84 million player hours and counting.

With the community's feedback, we're constantly making Elite Dangerous better than ever. We have incredible long-term ambition and we will continue to deliver on those ambitions. We will detail more exciting developments for Horizons very soon."

According to a report from EuroGamer, the developer is in a transition from a work-for-hire into a self-publishing model. An upcoming game 'Planet Coaster' is also in development. In addition, Frontier made the announcement about the sales as part of its publication of financial results for the six months ending on November 30, 2015.

Elite Dangerous has been the frontrunner for virtual reality since Frontier launched its first alpha test in December 2013. Last month, Elite Dangerous was the first triple A game that gave players full native SteamVR support, adds announcement from developer.

The game was launched in December 2014 for PC/Steam through a crowdfunding effort and followed by Mac and Xbox One releases last year.

Elite Dangerous: Horizons, which is currently in Early Access and costs $59.99 on Steam, is also referred to as Season 2, is an expansion that was released in December last year introducing a variety of new features.

It is a standalone game that doesn't require an installation of Elite Dangerous Season 1 for a player to enjoy the game. For PC gamers, if Steam detects that season 1 is in the PC library, a discount of 25% will be given. Elite Dangerous is now playable on the Mac, PC/Steam, Xbox One, and coming to PS4.
