Lawyer Wants Sean Penn to Testify in Mexican Court on El Chapo Case

By

A lawyer for recaptured Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman thinks that Sean Penn should be called to give evidence in a Mexican court about an article he wrote on Guzman. Penn wrote a 10,000 word article about his drug trafficking empire for Rolling Stone magazine following their clandestine meeting. In the article, Penn wrote that Guzman called himself as the world's biggest drug dealer.

According to Telegraph UK, Penn quoted Guzman as saying, "I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world." The article was accompanied by a note saying that the article was approved by Guzman before its publication and that he did not ask for any changes.

However, Juan Pablo Badillo, who has represented Guzman since 1993, seriously doubts that Guzman would make such an incriminating claim. "Its a lie, absurd speculation from Mr Penn," he said on Wednesday. "In a way, yes, it does complicate it (his defense). Mr Penn should be called to testify to respond about the stupidities he has said," Badillo added.

He said that he knows Guzman as a very serious and intelligent man after working with him for so many years. He was certain Guzman would have not made those claims.

Guzman staged a spectacular prison escape through a tunnel that opened into a whole in his cell's shower six months ago. While on the run, he met with Penn and Kate Del Castillo at an undisclosed jungle clearing in October or three months before he was captured according to USA Today. The meeting was brokered by Del Castillo, a Mexican-American actress Guzman was said to be infatuated with.

One of the world's most-wanted criminals was returned to the same prison he escaped from six months ago reports Raw Story. This time, he is regularly being moved to a new cell in different floors and a guard is posted 24 hours a day to prevent him from escaping jail a third time.

The process of extraditing El Chapo to the United States to face trial has also begun. However, it is expected to take years as his lawyers have been blocking the extradition in Mexican courts any way they can.
