Montreal Canadiens Player's Girlfriend Arrested for Domestic Abuse

By

On Sunday, Chanel Leszczynski, the girlfriend of Montreal Canadiens player, Alex Galchenyuk, was arrested after reports of a domestic dispute came in. According to reports, the police were called to attend to the apartment of the 21-year-old hockey player early on Sunday. This was because concerned neighbors were an argument between Galchenyuk and his girlfriend, the 27-year-old Leszczynski, had escalated. When police arrived, they were able to determine Leszczynski as the instigator of the fight and she was arrested shortly. On the subject on whether Galchenyuk would be pressing charges, the centre player is said not to proceed with such issues.

At the time of the arrest, Galchenyuk was said to be having a party at his apartment; following the team's earlier 3-1 loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Based on reports, Leszczynski showed up at the party. What transpired after that was a violent incident with her boyfriend. This led a neighbor of Galchenyuk to make a phone call to the police to report the domestic dispute that was going on inside the property. Police were able to respond quickly and make the necessary arrests.

Following this arrest, the team's general manager, Marc Bergevin, met with Galchenyuk and his teammate Devante Smith-Pelly; who was said to be at the apartment at the time of the incident. The three met after Tuesday's practice. Given the time of the arrest, many were quick to assume that there was something improper going on in the apartment. To this, Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty responded that this was an unwarranted accusation and that it would not be 'fair to make assumptions' just based on the time of the incident. While neither player spoke to the media, a number of their teammates have noted that the situation was being handled internally; especially since this was a personal issue between Galchenyuk and Leszczynski.
