‘Top Gun 2’ News: Jerry Bruckheimer talks how it's like working with Tom Cruise

'Top Gun 2' is a planned action-drama film that may see the return of Tom Cruise as the iconic Lt. Maverick. Co-producer Jerry Bruckheimer admitted that it was "fun" working with Cruise on ideas for the new film. Val Kilmer, who played supporting character Iceman in the first film, issued an apology over the Facebook announcement mix-up of his casting.

According to E! Online, Bruckheimer revealed that the sequel will incorporate advanced military technology as well as aircraft. He said, "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones... Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

The well-known film and television producer said that the new film will reflect advancements in technology but also highlight the need for real pilots instead of drones taking over real wars. He also said that the new film's concept came from leading man Tom Cruise himself and that it was "a lot of fun" working with him.

Cruise is set to reprise his role as the iconic Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, according to Cinema Blend. Cruise admitted that he would like to pilot jets again and make use of practical effects instead of CGI effects. Practical effects were used in the original film and it added to the cinematic appeal.

The 53-year old actor and filmmaker said, "I'd like to fly those jets again. But we've got to do all the jets practical. No CGI on the jets. I remember when I did the first one, I said 'Look, in my contract I had to have three flights in the F-14.' And it had to be in the film, a shot from that. So we had to film it... I'm saying right now - no CGI on the jets."

It remains unconfirmed whether leading lady Kelly McGillis will reprise her role as Maverick's love interest Charlie. Val Kilmer previously announced that he was attached to return as Iceman but quickly retracted his statement realizing that it was still premature to say so, according to Variety.

'Top Gun 2' is a planned sequel to the 1986 classic hit film of the same name. The first film was directed by the late Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It was released on May 16, 1986 and grossed a whopping $356 million against a $15 million budget.
