U.S. President Barack Obama maintains he has the authority to implement new gun control scheme as an executive order

After coming from his meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch, U.S. President Barack Obama has finalized the details of his proposed gun control scheme. According to the President, his intention to implement the new ruling as an executive order falls within his authority.

Earlier this week, Obama was criticized by various groups including candidates for the upcoming presidential elections due to his plan to lay out a new set of rules aimed at restricting the ownership and sale of firearms in the country. Critics argue that the President is targeting to implement the new gun control measures without the approval of the U.S. Congress.

For them, this move violates the Second Amendment or the people's rights to bear arms. Furthermore, they believe the President does not have the authority to make such an executive order.

But, as reported by Reuters, Obama's meeting with Lynch yesterday was meant to identify the proposals that he can include in the new gun control law without having to go through the government's legislative branch. He is confident that he will be able to implement the new scheme through the support of the public.

"These are not only recommendations that are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, but they're also ones that the overwhelming majority of the American people, including gun owners, support," the President said during the meeting.

But, even if he manages to enforce the new law, presidential candidates like Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who are very vocal about the disapproval of the gun control proposal, noted that they will still be able to revoke it if they get elected. According to VOX, since the law will not go through the legislative process and be passed as an executive order, the next leader of the country can immediately repeal it.

As for the contents of the new scheme, these include stricter licensing guidelines for those that sell guns, additional FBI personnel who will oversee the background checks on potential firearms owners and research funding for technological innovations aimed at making handguns and rifles safer.
