'Alien: Covenant' is an upcoming science-fiction film by director Ridley Scott. Katherine Waterston has landed the lead role in the sequel to 'Prometheus', replacing Noomi Rapace who is said to return in a more "minor role". The new film is said to follow 10 years after the events of the first.
According to Empire, Waterston has been cast as the latest leading lady in Ridley Scott's follow-up to 2012's science-fiction film 'Prometheus'. The 35-year old American actress is set to play the newest lead female protagonist, replacing Noomi Rapace who will reappear in a more "minor role". It was also reported that Rebecca Ferguson of 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' fame was previously attached to play the character but it seems Waterston has scored the lead instead.
It was reported by Movie News Guide that Waterston will reunite with 'Steve Jobs' co-star Michael Fassbender, who will reprise his role as the android David. The actress is also best known for her portrayal of Shasta Fay Hepworth in 2014's 'Inherent Vice' where she earned nominations for a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, a Denver Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Toronto Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has also been cast in the Harry Potter series spin-off 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' set to be released on November 2016.
The upcoming sequel will be set a decade following the events of 'Prometheus', according to IGN. Costume designer Janty Yates, who also worked in another Ridley Scott film 'The Martian', revealed that the new film will take place in the year 2103 - an entire century before the 'Alien' series takes place.

It is intended as the sequel to his 2012 release 'Prometheus' and will feature the return of Rapace and Fassbender as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and David, respectively.
