‘Gambit’ News: Anna Paquin wants to return as Rogue; Doug Liman to direct Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux

'Gambit' will not feature Anna Paquin's Rogue despite being the love interest of the lead character in the original comic books. Meanwhile, director Doug Liman has signed up to helm the film and work with lead actors Channing Tatum and Lea Seydoux.

According to Games Radar, Paquin will not appear in the upcoming live-action adaptation Marvel's 'Gambit'. The Academy Award winner is best known for playing Rogue in the X-Men franchise and appeared on several films including 2000's 'X-Men', 2003's 'X2' and 2006's 'X-Men: The Last Stand'. She also filmed quite a number of scenes in 2014's 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' but these were cut out of the final version.

Despite having a mere cameo in the latest X-Men film, she didn't seem to harbor any ill feelings about it. She said that fans may have been more offended than she was about director Bryan Singer's decision. She told IGN, "I'm like, 'I don't want to be in the plot line that doesn't work!' Look, don't hire Bryan Singer and then criticize him for making creative choices in his edit that will make the film good or not good. This is why you hire somebody like that."

The 33-year old actress hinted that Rogue may return for future properties in the franchise. She added that she is excited over the prospect of returning and that the people she worked with in previous films were very "dear" to her.

It is unusual that Rogue and Channing Tatum's Gambit won't be sharing some screen time together since their characters have been linked to each other romantically in the original comic books. Their relationship is said to be one of the most popular and longest pairings in the X-Men series' history.

Meanwhile, Doug Liman is all set to direct Tatum and co-star Lea Seydoux for 'Gambit' after Rupert Wyatt dropped the project. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he is in final negotiations after several rounds of meetings with film executives. Liman is well-known for his work on numerous blockbuster action hits including 'Edge of Tomorrow', 'The Bourne Identity', 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' and the upcoming thriller 'Mena' starring Tom Cruise.

'Gambit' is an upcoming superhero movie based on the X-Men character of the same name. It is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2016 in the United States. Doug Liman is set to direct the film based on a script by Joshua Zetumer.
