The famous Confederate battle flag have found its possible new home in the South Carolina museum, months after it was taken down from the state's Capitol Building. However, the staggering price that was allocated for the relocation heated up a comment about the project.
Months after taking down the flag that symbolizes racism and bigotry, the Confederate flag is now scheduled to be displayed in a Civil War Museum in which it would cost millions. According to Yahoo News, there has been agreement that the State Museum's Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum Commission would be the place where it would be hanged. The movement of the flag would cost the state $3.6 million which are budgeted in constructing a spectacular showcase, creation of a garden which would serve for the visitors' comfort, patching a leaky roof and four-full time staffers. Moreover, the biggest allocation would be on the creation of Congaree Room, so called "new wing" that will expand the museum by about a third of its current size.
After the commission voted unanimously in approving the expensive plan of transferring the flag which was taken down for the first time in 50 years, various comments were expressed. As reported by NY Daily News, building of a the new wing "would establish and maintain an appropriate, permanent and public display honouring South Carolina soldiers killed during the Civil War," as told by George Dorn, Commission Chairman. Moreover, the Relic Room's director, Mr. Allen Robertson said that the controversy surrounding the flag won't be removed if you put it in a box but rather there must be enough space and appropriate display to honour it.
However, despite these comments about approval of the project, State Representative Chris Corley subjected to differ, even calling the plan as a payoff. The Huffington Post reported that state representative described the project, irresponsible. He stated that there is an obscene huge amount of money that is allocated for the project. Also, he added that the money should go instead to repair damaged structures and roads by the floods. Lastly, he insinuated that wouldn't vote for the amount of money paired with the project.
The Confederate Flag is a symbol of slavery that was taken down on July after the killing of nine black church goers in the historic Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church by a 21-year old white supremacist. Relocating the flag is a resolution that was passed on to the museum and would cost the state by $3.6 million which sparked a heated comment from the state's representative. The state legislature is schedule to discuss the proposal regarding the flag's new locale and recommended space in January 1.
