Obama's administration most proficient health law has now extended its arms to the LGBT community as they are pushing to help more. Moreover, promoting Obamacare is also now going through the social media of gay men taking selfies.
The LGBT community are on the focus of the Obamacare after years of unfair treatment to them. According to Orlando Sentinel, Federal Officials are partnering with organizations that handle lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups to endorse the enrolment of their individuals to the Affordable Care Act which is about health insurance. Chief Financial Officer of Florida, Brian Winfield also stated that it is the first step toward the right direction since the community has been marginalized for decades. Moreover, this is not the first move of the administration as they claimed that since ACA was implemented, they are trying to educate the benefits of the law in various town halls, emails and outreach events.
The increased access to the insurance is a great big help to the LGBT community for the challenges it faced the past in acquiring insurance due to stigma and discrimination. As written by Advocate, statistics showed that LGBT people are more likely to live in poverty and therefore, be in chronic health situations. Moreover, the LGBT people are also prone to mental health illness such as substance-abuse, depression and anxiety as they are the target of stigma and discrimination.
Furthermore to this, to promote the advocacy of having health care insurance, the Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with organizations that advocate for the LGBT community. As reported by FreeBeacon, one social media campaign that was started is #HealthSelfie by Out2Enroll and has been posting photos of gay men in gym encouraging the LGBT community to enrol in the Obamacare. "Health is an LGBT equality issue - we all deserve to be healthy and to get the help we need to protect ourselves and our families," said Kellan Baker, a committee member of the organization.
Obamacare is a health care law that started its open enrolment in December 15, 2015 to allocate people without insurance to private institutions. The administration is now moving to provide assistance to the LGBT community since it was a mark for decades of discrimination. Also, #HealthSelfie is an advocacy to promote the health care act within the LGBT communities.
