'Agents of SHIELD' Season 3 Spoilers: Showrunners preview mysterious Inhuman’s motives, Coulson’s future after shocking midseason finale

By

In a couple of interviews, co-showrunners Jeff Bell and Jed Whedon has previewed what’s in the cards for Coulson and co. when the back half of Agents of SHIELD returns next year. The storyline of the other planet’s mysterious Inhuman, according to Whedon, will also be tackled deeply.

The Dec. 8th midseason finale of Agents of SHIELD found Agent Coulson putting Ward’s life to an end by using his robotic hand to press down on Ward’s chest until his heart stopped beating. However, a twist unfolded when an ancient, mysterious Inhuman took over Ward’s body and made it to earth to become part of Hydra. In conclusion, Ward may be gone but his body will remain in the show. Ditto actor Brett Dalton.

The recap has been shared by The Hollywood Reporter.

On this note, showrunner Jeff Bell chatted with the publication to tell fans about the motivations of the Inhuman who took over Ward’s body. “We don't know much at this state except that it seems to be very, very old and that people from Hydra have been paying it attention and trying to bring it back for centuries,” the executive producer explained.

He also warned that a creature with that kind of history “potentially has a lot of power and baggage.”

Co-showrunner Jed Whedon, meanwhile, hashed out what viewers will see from Coulson in the new bunch of episodes. On whether he will spend his time repenting what he had done to Ward, the showrunner points out that part of being a spy like Coulson is “moving forward”.

“He will have no choice but to continue as though nothing has happened, but it’s a question of how it affects him emotionally,” Whedon previewed via Entertainment Weekly.

Brett Dalton, who portrays Ward, reveals that he’s excited for the future of his new Inhuman self in the ABC series. “Even though he looks like me and talks like me and still has the memories, it’s a different entity, so it’s very exciting, actually. I’m very lucky to have a part on a show that is so successful and a part that changes so often and has such a cool story arc,” Dalton told Variety.

Moving forward, the second batch of episodes will also be delving on a new theme. Whedon shared that they are “still exploring the themes of what it means to be human and Inhuman.”

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD returns on Tuesday, March 8 on ABC.
