BIGBANG G-Dragon Gifts iKON a Song; First G-Dragon Track outside BIGBANG?

By

BIGBANG's leader and main producer, G-Dragon reportedly gave one of his songs to be included on label mate and rookie group iKON's debut album to whom he also mentored during their survival program "WIN" during their trainee days.

A poster which was uploaded on December 19 on YG Entertainment's official blog brought about surprises among fans as G-Dragon, who has almost never written a song for another group before unexpectedly produced and wrote "I Miss You so Bad", a song that is to be included on iKON's full album. The song's lyrics was written by G-Dragon, B.I, and Bobby, while its musical composition was produced by G-Dragon and DEE.P.

G-DRAGON writing a song for another group is a first for nine years - and the fact that he gave it to iKON as a debut present makes it even more meaningful for both the artists and their fans.

A representative of YG said, "'I Miss You so Bad' was a demo song made earlier this year for BIGBANG's album. But, we thought the song didn't go well with BIGBANG and that it would be better to give it to another group. Coincidentally, iKON was recording in the next studio, and we called them up and tried the song out on them. It sounded better, so G-Dragon gave the song to iKON as a debut present."

It was said that getting G-Dragon to write a song for another group is almost impossible no matter how much artists are willing to pay. The song is estimated to be worth an astounding amount of over ten million won.

iKON was not the only one surprised, as Yang Hyun Suk, YG Entertainment's CEO even called G-Dragon to check if this is true as he knows that the prodigy has never written a song for another singer with the exception of BIGBANG members before and he himself has never asked G-Dragon to do so.

A staff of YG Entertainment stated, "The song that G-Dragon gave to iKON is very good. At first, we thought that it was fit to be the title song but then people might think we are trying to use G-DRAGON's fame and popularity to promote a rookie's debut album. So after much thought, we decided to just include the song in the album rather than making it the title song as it was a present with good intentions from G-Dragon."

The two title tracks of iKON's debut album, which will be released on December 24, are "What's Wrong" and "Dumb and Dumber". The title songs are upbeat and fast tempo dance songs unlike iKON's previous releases.

The lyrics of both "What's Wrong" and "Dumb and Dumber" are written by members B.I and Bobby. Group leader B.I even participated in writing the music of the said tracks.

As the album will be iKON's first full album released three months after their debut and as "I Miss You so Bad", a song written by G-Dragon will be in the album, expectations are running high.

A music industry insider commented, "If an artist releases a full album and then wraps up performances for the album after performing for only one or two songs, the album is too short-lived. All YG songs have high quality, to an extent that all songs can be seen as title tracks.

I think that is why YG is taking that approach of exposing and introducing new songs as much and long as possible. Notably, for rookie idol groups like iKON, it is very important to have an opportunity to appeal themselves to fans consistently. iKON's marketing has been very aggressive, and the outcome looks satisfying as every single album has recorded bit success".

Meanwhile, iKON's new songs and full album will be released on the 24th this month including G-Dragon's gift track, on the Christmas Eve. The group will also be holding a concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Stadium at the end of January next year to write the next chapter of their successful debut story.
