A Hawaii doctor has been arrested and charged with the attempted murder of his wife after allegedly attacking her with a rock and trying to push her off a cliff.
The shocking attack took place on Monday morning at the Pali Lookout, a scenic but steep viewpoint on Oahu, according to Star Advertiser. The suspect, 46-year-old Gerhardt Konig, an anesthesiologist from Maui, was vacationing with his wife, 36-year-old nuclear engineer Arielle Konig.
Authorities say Gerhardt became violent after his wife refused to take a photo with him, allegedly attempting to shove her off the trail before repeatedly punching her, striking her with a rock, and even attempting to inject her with two syringes.
The brutal assault left Arielle with severe head and facial injuries, and she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Honolulu police launched an urgent manhunt for Gerhardt, closing the Pali Lookout to the public. Hours later, at around 6:45 p.m., police apprehended him near Pali Highway following a brief foot chase.
Gerhardt has since been charged with attempted murder. Additionally, Maui Health, where he worked as an independent contractor, announced his immediate suspension pending an investigation.
