A North Carolina man was rescued from a locked storage unit after calling police, claiming his girlfriend had trapped him inside for several days without food or water.
On February 20, a man in Monroe, North Carolina, was allegedly locked inside a storage unit by his girlfriend, 52-year-old Robin Renae Deaton, following an argument, WBTV reported.
Once inside, the girlfriend reportedly locked the door from the outside and secured it with two locks. The man remained trapped in complete darkness without access to food or water. He was unable to find his phone for several days until he located his device and called for help.
"I've been locked in a storage unit for about a week now, and I just now found my phone," the man told 911. "Yes, my girlfriend locked me in here. She doubled up my lock and I don't know how she put me in here. But she put me in here, and I just now found my phone inside this storage unit. I've been here since last week."
On February 24, Monroe police responded to the 911 call, forcing their way into the cluttered storage unit to free the man, who was severely dehydrated and taken to the hospital for evaluation.
"I just need outta here. I can't ... I just can't breathe. I haven't anything to drink or anything. I know there's two locks on this unit. She put two locks on it for some reason," the man said in the 911 call.
The unit was later described as filled with items, making it difficult for him to move or find his phone.
Investigators issued an arrest warrant for Deaton on charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Deaton was arrested in Charlotte and booked into Mecklenburg County jail, where she was denied bond, Queen City News reported.
