Florida Representative Cory Mills is under investigation after a reported assault on a 27-year-old woman in an apartment building earlier this week, according to officials.

Officers "were called to the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue, Southwest around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday for the report of an assault," said the Metropolitan Police Department, adding that an "active criminal investigation" is ongoing.

Police arrived at a luxury apartment building in The Wharf area of Southwest in order to speak to a victim who has not been identified but was not Rep. Mills' wife, according to NBC News.

The victim released a statement saying, "Yesterday, I contacted law enforcement to address a personal matter... Although the argument was emotionally charged, there was no physical abuse involved."

DC police and the Metropolitan Police Department are conducting separate investigations of the incident, which occurred at Congressman Mills' residence in Washington, DC.

"This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills' residence," read a statement from an MPD spokesperson. "Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly."

However, DC police possess multiple reports of the incident which allege varying levels of violence involved.

In one report, the victim was grabbed by "her significant other for over a year" who "grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out of the door," NBC reported. Officers observed "bruises on her arm which appeared fresh."

Furthermore, the report states that during a phone call between the victim and her alleged significant other, she "let officers hear Subject 1 [now identified by MPD as Mills] instruct her to lie about the origin of her bruises ... Eventually, Subject 1 made contact with police and admitted that the situation escalated from verbal to physical, but it was severe enough to create bruising."

Another report from the same incident indicates that law enforcement responded to a simple family disturbance, and that they did not arrest anyone due to lack of probable cause.

"Once MPD leadership became aware of this matter there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed. MPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter," said the department in a statement to NBC News4.
