A mass shooting and fiery car crash Tuesday night rocked Baltimore County—the home town of accused United Healthcare CEO assassin, Luigi Mangione—leaving one person dead and nine injured.

Police say the Towson, Maryland incident appears to have been targeted, though details remain unclear.

The violence unfolded near a funeral home, where police reported gunfire striking the building's facade, AP reported. The Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough described the chaotic events as a "rolling gun situation," with gunshots reported throughout the area. A car crash outside the funeral home, which was closed at the time, added to the devastation as flames engulfed an overturned vehicle.

The shooting occurred in the same area as Luigi Mangione's childhood home. Mangione, a once-promising Ivy League graduate from a prominent Baltimore family, has been the subject of headlines since he was arrested for allegedly assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.

Police have not drawn any connection between the two incidents, but the proximity of the mass shooting to Mangione's former community has added a layer of tension to an already reeling neighborhood.

"It appears that the individuals in this case somehow knew one another and that this incident was intentional and targeted," McCullough said. It is not yet clear whether all nine hospitalized victims sustained gunshot wounds.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski called the incident "shocking" and vowed to provide resources to aid the investigation. "These types of incidents are unheard of here," he said.
