A group of masked gunmen accused of shooting up a bar in central Mexico and killing 10 people allegedly set fire to their getaway vehicle in an effort to throw off police.
Seven men and three women were shot to death at the Los Cantaritos bar in downtown Santiago de Querétaro, according to the Querétaro state prosecutor's office.
Thirteen others were injured.
At least four suspects allegedly sprayed a barrage of bullets on unsuspecting patrons Saturday night, authorities said, according to local news outlet EL PAÍS.
The gunmen fled, ditched their getaway vehicle, and set fire to it about six miles away in El Marqués.
"The entire security system of Querétaro is mobilized to find the criminals," Gov. Mauricio Kuri said in a statement on X Saturday.
He followed up the post, reassuring locals Sunday, "We continue to provide ongoing care to the injured and to the relatives of the good people who lost their lives yesterday at the hands of a handful of wretches."
"I reiterate my condolences, solidarity and support," he added. "This is an act that has brought mourning to Querétaro and fills us with pain and indignation."
Customers reportedly tried to dodge the gunfire by dropping to the floor and hiding under tables, EL PAÍS reported, citing surveillance footage.
Among the victims was 31-year-old Fernando G alias "La Flaca" – a member of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel – and the main target of the deadly attack, federal sources said, according to local news El Universal.
Sources also alleged a territory dispute between the JNGC and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel triggered the bloodshed.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed at least one person has been arrested so far, the outlet reported.
