Authorities arrested a person of interest in connection with the suspected killing of a U.S. Army sergeant found dead in a dumpster.
Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23, was reported missing Monday when she failed to show up to morning formation at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, according to military officials.
Her body was discovered in a dumpster on the military base next to the single soldier's quarters later that evening, the army said, according to KSDK-TV.
On Thursday, a person of interest was taken into custody, but authorities did not elaborate on the individual's identification or relationship to Roque.
"The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood team is deeply saddened by this devastating loss, and we send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow Soldiers of Sergeant Roque," Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general, said in a statement. "Sergeant Roque was a daughter, sister, friend and Soldier who chose to serve our country bravely and honorably. Her passing has caused a tremendous void throughout our team, and while there are no words to ease the pain, we continue to provide care, resources and support to those who are affected during this difficult time."
Roque, of Ligonier, Indiana, enlisted in the service in 2020.
She worked as a bridge crewmember, serving as a mine dog handler with the K9 detachment in the 5th Engineer Battalion, and went on to receive the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army Service Ribbon, said officials.
A motive and manner of death in Roque's suspected murder is under investigation.
