Seattle police released a 19-year-old from custody just 27 hours after he allegedly stabbed his neighbor to death on Friday.
On Sept. 16, K'Shawn Konscience Jimerson called 911 to report that he had stabbed someone in self-defense and that he would wait for police "outside with the knife," according to Fox News.
The altercation took place in Jimerson's apartment when the victim, 65-year-old veteran Michael Gray, was doing handyman work for him. Ring doorbell camera footage, obtained by the King County Prosecutor's Office, shows Jimerson attacking Gray with a wooden object, before using a knife.
Jimerson struck Gray in the back of the head once until he fell to the ground, and then two more times as he laid on the floor, according to the outlet.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Jimerson covered in blood holding a butcher knife. Officers also found Gray inside who had sustained multiple stab wounds. He succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Jimerson was taken into custody that same day. Following his arrest, Jimerson appeared in court 27 hours after the incident before Judge Michelle Gehlsen. Despite objections from the police department and the prosecutor asking for a $2 million bail, Judge Gehlsen set his bail at $50,000.
Jimerson posted bail and was released, pending further legal action. Because Washington state only requires 10 percent of a bond for release, it's possible Jimerson paid as little as $5,000. Additionally, Fox News reports he was sent home without any "electronic home monitoring."
Investigators are actively working on the case by reviewing surveillance footage and gathering testimony from witnesses.
