The Crown Prosecution Service announced today that a former British pop star has been accused of drugging and having sexual relations with two girls aged between 12 and 14. 70 year-old Gary Glitter has been slapped with eight sexual offenses in total and will not be facing additional legal action in connection with five other allegations that were made by two more women, prosecutors have said.
Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London Baljit Ubhey said, "We have carefully considered the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police Service in relation to Paul Gadd, also known as Gary Glitter. He was arrested on 28 October 2012 over allegations of sexual offenses and the police have been providing material to the CPS since July 2013, with the most recent material submitted in March 2014. Having completed our review, we have concluded, in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Gadd to be charged with eight offenses under the Sexual Offences Act 1956."
The charges include four counts of indecent assault, one of administering a drug to facilitate sexual intercourse and one of sexual intercourse on a girl under 13.
The Daily Mirror said Glitter was the first person who was arrested as part of Operation Yewtree, which was set up in the wake of the scandal caused by another entertainer, iconic BBC presenter Jimmy Saville. Moreover, he is the fifth one to be charged as part of the operation, which also saw the prosecution of TV star Rolf Harris, publicist Max Clifford, DJ Dave Lee Travis and former BBC driver David Smith.
According to the victims, who are now in their late 40s, Glitter had assaulted them, with one who was 12 or 13 at the time of the incidents in 1977.
Mirror said Glitter is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 19 this year.
