Just days after a Portland nurse vanished under "unusual and alarming" circumstances, her own neighbor, a fellow nurse, now finds herself entangled in a web of suspicion and criminal charges.
Following newly-wed nurse Melissa Jubane's disappearance, Portland authorities have now charged a neighbor with her murder.
On September 4, a welfare check was requested when the St. Vincent Hospital nurse had not reported for her morning shift, which set off alarm bells among her coworkers, friends, and family.
Beaverton Police responded to Jubane's residence at 1050 SW 160th Avenue in Beaverton, where they met with apartment staff and searched her unit.
Jubane, 32, was not at the apartment, and her lack of communication was considered "unusual and alarming", according to the Beaverton Police Department.
Furthermore, her phone had been turned off, and searches for her bank and credit card transactions yielded no results.
Shortly after, Jubane was entered into the national law enforcement databases as a missing person.
Following an extensive investigation, policdetermined Jubane'se neighbor, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert, had a hand in her disappearance.
Subsequently, Schubert was arrested Saturday evening and charged with Melissa's murder.
The 32-year-old nurse's remains have since been recovered.
Washington-native Jubane had just recently married Bryan Llantero from Kalihi, Hawaii on Oahu August 24, 2024 after dating for a decade. Relatives told KHON2 the two would fly back and forth to see one another.
"I miss her," said her mother-in-law Imelda Llantero.
"I'm so happy Bryan met her, I told Bryan to always love her. They were happy, very happy."
Llantero said her son is completely destroyed and devastated, and has asked her to fly to Oregon to be by his side.
The investigation remains ongoing.
