Is this the end of the Canning family battle? Daughter drops lawsuit against parents

By

According to court records, 18 year-old Rachel Canning has dropped all charges that she filed against her parents Sean and Elizabeth on Tuesday. The New Jersey teenager drew international acclaim for the wrong reasons when she sued her parents for financial support after she left their home voluntarily following a heated exchange, Reuters said.

It could be recalled that Canning claimed in her lawsuit that she experienced emotional abuse and abandonment after her parents allegedly kicked her out after turning 18 last year. Her parents, on the other hand, argued in court that their daughter had problems following home rules like curfews and chores and had disciplinary problems at school. Prior to facing her parents at court, Canning was living with a friend and her friend's father had funded her lawsuit.

Aside from asking her parents to pay the remaining balance of her high school tuition bill, Canning also demanded access to funds for her college plans and a monthly stipend as some sort of damages for her improper emancipation, Reuters said.

Last week, Canning agreed to return home to her parents in Lincoln Park, New Jersey. The news agency noted that both Sean and Elizabeth had agreed earlier that they will continue to pay for their daughter's high school tuition and expenses should she come home and finish her high school education.

The New Jersey teenager reportedly filed papers to dismiss the case she filed against her parents in the New Jersey family court. According to her filing, her decision to drop the case was voluntary.

Reuters said the dismissal of the lawsuit had shed light of concerns regarding the extent of non-divorced parents' financial obligations to their adult children in New Jersey.

When the news agency asked Rachel Canning and her parents for comment about the lawsuit's dismissal, the Canning family did not respond to Reuters' request on Tuesday.
