A study was performed by the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" among 81 participants that were engrossed in a "Western diet" that was high in refined grains. The results showed that, after the participants were broken into two groups where one stayed on the Western diet and the other switched to meals high in whole grains, their stool samples revealed how whole grains really helped boost the immune system.
Simply put, the stool samples that belonged to the group that stuck to meals high in whole grains had more acids produced by beneficial bugs and a decrease in a type of bacteria known to cause inflammation.
