A new law passed by Broward county commissioners will legalize medical marijuana dispensaries in the area. However, there are zoning regulations business owners need to abide with in order to benefit from the new provision.
The new law will only affect few sections of the county, such as parts of Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest 27th Avenue. The county commissioners scheduled a public hearing in order to set ground rules on medical marijuana dispensaries. The scheduled hearing will be on March 14, Miami Herald reported.
The new ordinance requires county commissioners to vote on each business application. It is still unknown if how many business applications will be allowed, or under what spatial requirements. But the initial statements outline that medical marijuana dispensaries will only be located on industrial zones.
Marijuana products like tinctures, pills, vaporizer pens and others will be only be allowed at least 1,200 feet away from churches, day-care centers, schools and other dispensaries. It also require medical marijuana dispensaries to be located on standalone buildings lined with 6-foot fences, and a 24-hour security system and guarded round-the-clock, as mentioned on Medical Marijuana Zoning guidelines.
The ordinance will only be allowed within the borders of Broward County and will not apply to cities. This is among the number of considerations from local states/counties regarding the legalization of medical marijuana dispensaries. Marijuana is said to be a potential cure for depression, PTSD, psychosis and other mental health problems.
Marijuana was banned on majority of countries around the world due to its addictive tendencies. But one by one, several states have been open to legalizing marijuana dispensaries, provided that it will be used for medical purposes. Aside from mental health benefits, some studies conclude that marijuana can prevent cancer from spreading, treats glaucoma, relieves arthritis, controls seizures and significantly reduce pain, Life Hack mentioned.
