In lieu of the recent abortion laws under the Trump presidency, the man who effectively passed legislation to ban abortion has once admitted that he had "never thought about" the reason behind why women have terminations.
The Republican politician in Ohio, Jim Buchy, was among the legislators in the state who passed the bill to ban an abortion after a heartbeat is recognized on the foetus. Medically this stage is achieved at around six weeks.
It is thought that the law will effectively ban abortions entirely by outlawing them prior to when women become aware of their pregnancy and hence are unable arrange a proper termination. Now evidence has come to light that the staunch anti-abortion politician, Buchy, once caused controversy by admitting that it had never occurred to him why women undergo abortions.
According to The Independent, the interview that surface was one from 2012 with Al Jazeera publications. Buchy was questioned about his efforts at the time to limit abortions to the period of time prior to when a foetus starts a heartbeat.
The questioning reporter asked: "What do you think makes a woman want to have an abortion?" Buchy's response has him appear lost for words and startled. He takes a pause and then states "Well, there's probably a lot of reas- I'm not a woman."
He added, "I'm thinking now if I'm a woman why would I want to get... Some of it has to do with economics. A lot of it has to do with economics. I don't know. It's a question I've never even thought about."
The bill passed in Ohio follows through with other attempts to restrict or outright ban abortion access by Republican politicians across the US. Given how the new Arkansas law under the Trump administration now allows rapists sue their victims if they demand an abortion, is it clear that these attempts will increase.
In Texas, state health officials have now proposed that women who seek and undergo abortions will have to arrange and attend funerals for the foetus.
