PlayStation 4 shipments have reached impressive numbers, according to the latest financial report of Sony.
As reported in the website of Attack of the Fanboy, the shipment of PlayStation 4 has resulted to an increase in revenue for the gaming segment and in the process pushing up not only the income of the company's other departments but also the PlayStation 4 breaking the distribution record which the PlayStation 2 previously held for number of consoles sold in one quarter.
To date, shipment of the PlayStation 4 has reached 57.1 million globally and is expected to hit the 60 million mark by March. The outlook remains positive thanks to a solid line-up of software exclusives that include Horizon: Zero Dawn, Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Gravity Rush 2 as well as the launch of the White Glacier model of the console in Europe and Asia.
According to figures published in Venture Beat, the game and network service revenues of Sony amounting to $5.3 billion for the third fiscal quarter of 2016 was higher than the $5.20 billion revenue in the same period the previous year. Operating income was likewise higher amounting to $431 million up from $372 the previous year. Revenues were also boosted with the launch of the PlayStation VR headset. Another contributor to the record shipment is the increase in the sales of PS4 software.
In an article published in Gamespot, it was revealed that the PSVR boosted the sales of the PS4 since most users wanted to use the headset while playing with the PS4. It also helped push the sales of the PS4 Pro up.
The record shipment of the PS4 overshadowed the poor performance of Sony's other segments. One of the divisions that reported a loss is the Pictures segment. When it acquired Columbia Pictures in 1989, Sony had huge financial expectations and the company attributed the loss to the reconfiguration of the business model for Sony Pictures.
