The world is full of all types of parasites. Some parasites won't really bother us, but then again there are parasites that, if left unchecked, can be completely destructive to any lifeform. Such is the case with this tapeworm, which was found inside a man's body with a whopping length of six feet. Thankfully, doctors were able to remove it, but not in the usual way you would expect.
WSBTV.com claimed that the large tapeworm was found in the man during a colonoscopy, which is a routine check-up done to most people when they want to check for colorectal cancer, or cancers often found in the large intestine or colon. The patient had complained about pain in his abdominal area for more than two months before going to the hosptial, and when the doctors performed an endoscopy, they found that the worm was coiled up in the upper part of his small intestine.
According to CNN, one of the doctors, Dr. Cyriac Phillips, said that they found a segment of the worm that was undulating and moving, further adding that this was a clear indicator that there was a tapeworm infestation in the man. While most tapeworm removals can be complicated and involve removing pieces of the tapeworm out piece by piece, the doctors were able to remove the tapeworm surprisingly through the mouth of the patient.
With precision and care, the doctors pulled out the tapeworm which measured to be about 6.1 feet. They were able to determine that this type of worm was known as a Taenia solium, or a pork tapeworm, and this usually comes from pork that is uncooked correctly before consumption. The spread of tapeworm eggs can be done through contaminated food and water, so one must always be mindful of what they're consuming, how its prepared, and of course how to prevent it from spreading.
