John Legend, Mark Ruffalo and Kal Penn are just a few of the celebrities, politicians and the like who have joined the protest against President Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim immigration ban. Last Friday, the president signed an executive order that puts restraints on refugees, preventing them from coming in to the country, as well as immigrants that come from “majority-Muslim” nations, such as Syria, Iran and Somalia.
In a statement released by acting Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Gillian Christensen to Reuters, the anti-Muslim immigration ban is also applicable even to green card holders. Silicon Valley actor Kumail Nanjiani took to Twitter and expressed his views over Trump’s executive order, tweeting that the “#Muslimban accomplishes nothing but hate.” He also called out Vice President Mike Pence and Senator John McCain, saying that they should be ashamed of themselves after bringing on terrible circumstances.
Other celebrities are also speaking out in support for Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. Unconfirmed news allege that Farhadi is banned from coming in to the United States to attend the Oscar awards, for which he has been nominated for ‘The Salesman.’ Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez joined the protest against the anti-Muslim immigration ban, posting on Instagram that she feels like “we are in a nightmare right now.” Fellow R&B singer Rihanna also deemed Trump “an immoral pig” and his executive order “disgusting” and “devastating.
Prior to taking on his official role at the 2017 Producers Guild Awards, which was to introduce ‘La La Land,’ John Legend gave an emotional speech as his response to Trump banning all refugees from entering the country for the time being. “Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions,” the award-winning singer said. He also emphasized that he strongly disagrees with such policy and believes that the country should be better than what is portrayed in the current circumstances.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian-West has also spoken out against the anti-Muslim immigration ban, given that her descendants were once forced to flee their native country, Armenia. The business mogul shared an image on Twitter, showing that there are more people in the U.S. who are being killed by another American as opposed to people who are being killed by Islamic immigrants in the country annually.
